Sand in Your Shoes

He kept his hand on his heart; I never understood why he always did that. He looked like he was clutching himself; like he was experiencing immense pain. Maybe he was… maybe he really was going to miss us all. Or maybe what he had said when he was drunk was true.

’I’m famous now! Y’all bitches can suck it and go fuck yourselves.’

I cringed as I remembered them. He looked at me, his eyes wide and sorrowful.

“I’ll see you around, Penny?” he asked, looking at me. I simply nodded. I hardly knew what to say to him anymore. I mean, like he said, he didn’t really need us anymore. I walked back down to the shore and slipped my feet into the warm water and it all started coming back to me.
